My Right To Live

Author's (long) Note:

Why is it that when you have a disability, that's all people see?

Kids my age:

"Look at her in her fancy-ass wheelchair. I've seen her walk. She's a poser."

Adults:

"Oh, look at that poor girl. Can't even walk in a straight line."

Little kids:

"(addresses parent) Why can't that girl walk right? What's wrong with her?

Answer:

Yes, I can walk. But not for very long, and only on some days.

Why should it matter if I'm walking in a straight line or not, as long as I'm getting where I need to go?

Nothing's wrong with me. We all have our differences and challenges, and this is just one of mine.

For anyone feeling down or like there's no point anymore, or feeling like other people will never accept you, this song is for you. And a word of advice: You have to accept YOURSELF.

Well I may,

I may be different.

And I may,

I may be weird.

But I know,

Inside,

That my rights

Are just

The same as yours.

And I know,

Inside.

Oh I know,

Inside,

That I have

The right...

To live.

My.

Life.

This is my

Life.

This is my

Right.

This is my

Time.

My time to

Defend my...self.

And no matter

What.

I'll still be here.

Oh,

And sticks and stones...

May break my bones...

But words...

Can break

My heart...

And ohh-ohh-ohh,

I don't care when they say...

"Don't cry. Don't cry."

Because I'm hurt,

Because I'm sad,

Because I have...

The right...

To live...
