Neighbors

The little boy

his little red raincoat

I remember my little purple raincoat

it used to feel so big.

His grandma

her black raincoat

trowel in hand

I remember my grandma teaching me gardens

one big idea

for one little person.

They walk the yard

the little boy's enormous kingdom

he may rein someday

learns his way

the grandma's kingdom

nearly no longer

she must teach him

but she loves teaching just the same.

Kindness is many

many things

kindness is the grandma and the little boy

raincoats and trowels

kingdoms passed on

in the neighbor's backyard.

  • Dinner with You

I only ever came here for the fortune cookies

I don't know if you can tell

when I stare at the menu

under shiny plastic with a red rim

    when I glance

up I can tell you're reading the Mandarin

  • In that Field

    It never happened

that everything was beautiful and nothing hurt

but if it did it would have been

    lying in the grass

the kind that surrounds you like the ocean

    and flows like a river

We have something to learn from
