This is not a political poem
It can’t be
Because I need hope
And I cannot find hope in such a divided world
I mean, look at us
Left versus right
Red versus blue
Us versus them
What happened to We the People?
What happened to the United States?
No
This is still not a political poem
I will write about anything else
I will write about the weather
It’s been just a tad bit colder recently
It even snowed
There was ice of the street
ICE is also on the street
But no, this is not a political poem
So instead, let’s talk about family
And Sunday dinner
How have you been?
Oh, not very good?
Yeah, I know the prices are harder to deal with right now
Inflation is hitting pretty hard. . .
Wait, no, because this is not a political poem
Okay?
I will ask about school, then
How is that going?
Oh, the kids had another drill today?
Extreme weather, or. .
No
No, I promise this isn’t a political poem
What about books?
What have you been reading?
Oh, I couldn’t find that one
Last time i went to the library
I think maybe they removed it
I think maybe it was banned?
No
No, I refuse to write a political poem
I refuse to write a hopeless poem
I need hope
Please
Can we talk about something else?
Anything else?
I don’t know who I can trust
Who I can believe
So please, let me write a poem
Let me write a poem about the weather
Or about family or school
Let me write a poem about books
And it not be political
Because this is not a political poem
At least, it shouldn’t have to be
