One Died that Night

Normal days,

tragic endings,

I was playing games,

you were seeing lights,

I was listening to background noise and music,

you were hearing sirens.

Glass breaking,

life shattering,

cars crashing,

I didn't know it til it was too late.

Everything was broken,

and I wasn't there to be holding your hand,

you saw the world stop turning,

I could feel my heart burning,

waiting to know if you were alive.

When they looked at me words unspoken,

I knew my world was broken,

and you weren't there to be holding my hand,

all I could taste was this moment,

coppery,

metallic,

red,

I'd bleed just to know you were alive,

but I saw your eyes,

you were gone.

One died,

but two lives were lost that night.

  • Whispers of a home

I hear the tick of a clock letting me know every second I am wasting as I scroll through my phone,

the slide of my finger against the screen,

the tap of my thumb as I message someone back,

    artificial noise.

playing in the soft mud of the Earth,

Some where a child picks springs new dandelions,

blowing on the fluffy seeds to make wishes.

Pledge your life to liberty and justice,

raise your hand and take an oath to serve and protect,

    who are you protecting though?
