One Mistake is All it Takes

Her eyes light up the galaxy

They shine like golden stars,

And on her face a rainbow peeks

Beyond her bleeding scars.

Atop the hill of vanquished beasts

There lay her precious prize,

But on the peak of tragedy

Was Devil in disguise.

No honor written on her plaque

Instead, “She fell for lies,”

She locks the door and pounds the floor

With unrelenting cries.

Naively cutting up the trees

She disregards the splinters

Until they ravage up her sleeves

Like icy shards of winter.

Now, standing in a field of snow

To fight both dot and Devil

Her head is neither high nor low

She faces all at level

Her shoulders sag from weary losses

Feet trudge forth with groaning sadness

And so it is when ‘mong the hoaxes

Truth jumps up with jaunty coaxes

I reach a brick motel, its walls strung with webs gleaming under the full moon. The cacophonous crows and zooming cars have washed away the motel’s soul, leaving it numb and still amidst the rush.
