Ourselves

We are running from

Ourselves

Because we have built

Ourselves

As a single entity

Connected by invisible strings

Wiring the universe

Together but

Tethered back

From living

From breathing

From existing as

Ourselves.

We are told how to be

Ourselves

By the things

On the other ends of

The invisible strings

Who pretend to be

Themselves

Who tell us that they are existing

Perfectly and we should too

To tell us how to exist

To tell us why to exist

To tell us what we are.

We must decide

What we are all by

Ourselves

Without the strings

Telling us what it means to be

Yourself

Without people pretending they are

Themselves.

Then we can be one

Again if that is what

We decide by

Ourselves

Or we can be

Ourselves

And you can be

Yourself

And they can be

Themselves

Without connection

But without tethers

We will exist freely

We must decide

What to do by

Ourselves.

  • The Third Grader

Raincoat like the petals of a sunflower hangs to her knees

    Glittery rainbow headband

That only keeps half her hair back

    Shiny pink nails

    Strawberry boots

Shy smile that makes you feel lucky you got to see it

  • They knew what could be

The little girl sat in her swing

blond curls the way they are before

you grow up the everywhere I don't care

it looks like my hair was woven from sunlight

a throne for a flower crown.
