People Watching Jams

Music
Pours into her ears
Via the small earbuds
Tucked carefully behind her long
Dark hair
Her eyes dance around the room
Taking in the other people around her
The guy on his phone
Who seemed upset, eyebrows growing closer together with every worried tap of his screen
The woman with three children pulling on her sweater sleeves
As she tiredly lugs their bags through the airport
The old man with the walker and glasses that seem an inch thick
She bounces her leg in time with the beat
Watching people come and go
From her mildly uncomfortable seat in the waiting area
The music fades
And she rolls her eyes
As a commercial for something she's sure she doesn't need
Starts playing.

  • The Boxes In The Corner

    Looming over your shoulders

Each stack higher than its former

    Every thought and every scrap

Of an idea too scared to ponder

    Every moment that hurt

    Each minute that lingered longer

  • Inadequacy

How do I push the words out
    From behind my taffy tongue
    Thick with salty tears
    And full of grubby thumb

    I’m a child
    Pretending that I’m numb
    To escape the overwhelming feelings

    Why

When feet fall soft but quick

    Does the hallway extend

And the hot breath of whoever’s behind me feel hotter

Why do I stay pressed to the wall

    Like a stubborn gruby sticker
