I have always thought about the future a lot
It was always college
And ivy league goals
And 4.0 GPAs
And all night study sessions
It was always medicine
I am going to be a doctor
Saving lives
In some hospital somewhere
And it is still that
But now it’s more
But now it's a little, old house on a port
Bright colored door
Rocking chairs out front
Cats, 3 of them
But now it's you,
coming home from months at sea
coming home from doing what you love
Greeting me with a hug
But now it's us,
Drinking hot chocolate
Celebrating any and every holiday
Always looking for excuses to be happy together
But now it's this
And I realize
I want you in my tomorrow
I want you in all of my tomorrows
And I realize
I love you enough to give my mother the life she wants me to have
She won’t like that it's all platonic
She will probably insist it isn't
One day, I will get tired of correcting her
But it won’t matter, so long as I can go home
To the arms of my best friend
So long as I can go home to you
