Purple paper ripped out of my notebook
you're beautiful in all the ways
it says in my purple fountain pen
I taught my sister how to hold the pen
and she wrote me the note
I fold it down the middle then the middle of that
drop it on the floor.
She reads the note off the floor in English
doesn't get caught for passing notes Ms. L isn't like that
and slips it in her pencil case
with a smile
behind her hair.
It's in her locker
someone slipped it through the slits
landed on the black marble French notebook
she reads it and
thinks about the ones she tries to impress
they wouldn't tell her that.
Looking for his pen
he finds the purple paper
someone dropped it into his bag
who?
does it matter?
when he finds his pencil he draws flowers
on the edge of the ripped purple paper
then curls it in his palm
to give to someone else.

This idea of passing on little affirming or motivational notes in an endless chain is so sweet. It reminds me of when people leave "You are beautiful" Post-its on public bathroom mirrors for other people to find, to spread confidence and joy.
