Sneak Peak at My Book

BOOK PREVIEW
Chapter Five

The portal spit them out, and Fei rubbed her temples as it dissolved, leaving her and Tombri in the middle of a bustling street.

“I think I’m gonna be sick,” she informed him. “Wait—this is Norrwoke?”

Somehow it was everything and nothing like what she’d imagined at the same time. There were roads, clumps of neighborhoods and random stores along the sidewalk, a bit like New York City, only it was so. Much. Techier than anywhere on Earth, from the robotlike vehicles on the street and the virtual reality headsets on literally everyone to the gigantic screens and flashing lights visible from every house. There were drones, robots, hoverboards, colorful sphere bomes that roamed the streets, gadgets and gizmos Fei had never seen before—everything. And Fei could tell that all those things, even the robots, used no gas, exhaust, or anything harmful that could potentially pollute. And the lavender snow on the ground was stunning in its own way, light purple flakes dropping gently from the sky to add to the foot-high drifts that the passersby were trudging through.

    “It’s amazing,” she breathed.

“I knew you’d like it.” Tombri grabbed her arm and wove between the kids and adults, heading for a building with bold letters that spelled out LOKSHIRE LIBRARY in all capitals. “This is our main city, but there are a few smaller ones outside it, along with mermaid lakeside villages, alien towns, and fairy communities. There are also enclosures for dragons, unicorns, and other nonmyth creatures like that, but those are far away from here, and you’d have to have an updated bome to get there. The updated bomes can teleport,” he added, “and ‘nonmyth’ is our way of saying ‘creatures the other humans think are mythical but actually exist’. Cats and dogs are ordinary animals that even the Earthians know about, and so they’re just…cats and dogs.”

Fei nodded, trying to keep her sanity from cracking, but her head was spinning with thoughts and questions and emotions. “Wow.”

    Festival

    Long day

past where morning sun shines and into the dark huskiness of night

    fluorescent lights beating down

    then flickering off

    Instincts

    Some things are just instinct

like when I just ran to you

as soon as I saw you

    and hugged you for -

    oh yeah -

    the first time

    very very platonic of course

    you're my big brother.

    Flying solo

Your solo is like sun shining through the clouds in my heart

    it's like a platonic ballad

    it's like you are playing

    through first loves

    and forbidden loves

    and grass in the summer

    and crunchy chips
