Summer

Summer is just around the corner

And I can feel it.

I can feel it in the trees' blossoms under my fingertips,

Every dandelion I pick for a crown that always droops,

In how the mud sinks into my shoes,

In every drop of rain on my skin.

I can feel summer

Vibrating in my bones.

I can feel it creeping

Just out of reach -

In every heat wave

The humidity

The way my t-shirt sticks to my back.

Slinking in around the edges of my life,

And it's undeniably there -

But I can't accept it.

Summer means

Closing out another year.

Where is my life going?

Why are the years going so fast?

And soon

They will be leaving.

Summer is right there,

This unseen pressure

And while I do enjoy some aspects -

Pool parties, popsicles, air-conditioned movie nights, farmers markets -

I do not like

What comes with it.

  • To the trees

    To the trees,

    Your green crowns standing proudly against the sky;

    To the trees,

    Trunks twisting every which way

    Rooted firmly to the earth

With your crests in the clouds.

    To the trees,

  • Sisters

Where are you going to be

    When I need you?

Are you going to stand there

    And take it?

    Are you going to

    Share the load?

Are you going to have my back

    When I'm anything but perfect?

  • P.E.

    Today

    We had P.E.

    I do not mind P.E. -

    I do not care -

I can play sports like any teenager

    If not a little better.

There would have been no problem

    Except

You had to create one, didn't you?
