The Things You Will Become- Chapter 2

Chapter 2

Lucas woke up that morning sleepier than ever. He groaned and rubbed his eyes as he got out of bed. It was barely light outside but he could see the steel tower and the skyscrapers proudly standing on the rich side of town. He thought about going back to sleep, but the one luminous light in his room kept him awake. That one light provided energy to his whole home. Lucas felt that strange energy again, his body started to faintly glow. He wondered, could he do more with the Luminous Lights? How would that be possible?

“Only one way to find out,” he said aloud. He focused on it harder than he ever had before. Lucas thought it seemed pointless at first, focusing on the light, but as he did it he knew that he had to be connected to the glowing, magical orb. Somehow, it had to be true. Something started to happen! Slowly but surely the luminous light began to hover, going off of the ground. “Wow!” Lucas said in disbelief. Lucas slowly moved his arm to the right and the orb went that way too. His thoughts controlled its movements. He reached into it and pulled out a small glowing ball. Instead of being solid it seemed alive. When he thought of different objects the orb changed with his thoughts! Using only the light and his mind he made a pillow that was as soft as any, a journal that he could write on, but the coolest thing he made was a sword that glowed like the sunrise Lucas awoke to every morning. Lucas checked the sword out, swinging it around his room.

“Lucas!” his mom called, “Where are you?”

Lucas jumped and all of his creations disappeared. He trembled as he put the Luminous Light back in its holder, shocked at what he could do.

Next door Daniel was studying for a test when Lucas ran in.

“Daniel, I need to show you something. Follow me!”

“Wait! I need to study, how important is this?” Lucas ran upstairs and his friend followed.

“What is it?” asked Daniel.

“Do you have that light you made with the glowing orb?” Lucas inquired. Daniel fetched a box and took out the lamp.

“Watch this,” said Lucas, “I can make anything I want with it!”.

Lucas concentrated and the orb started floating. Daniel’s jaw dropped. “Oh my goodness! You should keep that a secret, people could be looking for you if you can do that, but have some fun with them too! You can make anything that is in your mind, be creative,”

Lucas nodded but before he left, he needed to ask Daniel something. “What do you mean when you say that people will be looking for me?” “Normal people do not have that power, they will be looking for you if they know you do,” Lucas left Daniel’s house, thinking about what Daniel had told him. What did the government think about his powers, and how was this connected to his dad?  Meanwhile The Chosen One, who had cameras everywhere, saw something that he had not seen in years.

“It’s not possible! Figure out who that child is!” he demanded. A woman nearby typed something into her computer. “There is no record of this boy in the database,” she reported. “Oh,” The Chosen One smirked.  I think I may know him after all,” the Chosen One said. “I’ll be seeing your son soon Mark.” he muttered.

Daniel lived quietly with his family, making new things with the materials around him. Daniel wanted to be an engineer when he grew up. He felt like he was inspiring people the most when he was making new things. Daniel was known as the most resourceful kid in the school. His favorite subject was engineering. Lucas’s was history. All of the schools were run by the government. The symbol of the government was an orange sun with 5 red lines around it. The sun was supposed to be a symbol of the incredible sunrises, and the lines represented the future. Lucas thought that the government should have something to represent the past, to remember the victims of the fire, but they had never changed their symbol, and it did not look like they would anytime soon. Lucas was wondering why he had his remarkable powers. Something was lingering in his thoughts. Lucas needed to answer the questions that had been bothering him if he wanted to figure out the true meaning of his powers, and then a huge question floated into his mind: was his imagination the key to unlocking the true extent of his powers? Lucas felt like they were all connected, and he had to figure out what was going on, no matter what. He was having a hard time deciding whether or not to tell his mom about his discovery. Plus, he had other questions too. Did his mom already know? Did the government know!? These thoughts passed through his mind. He was confused about his creations and wondered what he could be. And what about Daniel? What would the government do if they knew about him? If they wanted him, would that put Daniel in danger?

With all these thoughts swirling around in his head, Lucas could not sleep. The Crescent Moon Canal looked unreal in the moonlight and the stars shown above him, but soon the moon fell and the sun rose, starting a new day. Little did Lucas know, that day would change his life.

It started like any other morning. Lucas got dressed and ate breakfast quickly. “So, what have you been up to with Daniel?” Lucas’ mom asked. “He made an intriguing lamp with a luminous light,” Lucas replied. Lucas took the last bite of his breakfast and went upstairs. His mom sighed. “What should I tell him?” she asked herself, worried about Lucas. An ongoing battle in her mind was ensuing on whether she should tell him about his father. Lucas felt uneasy, like someone was watching him.  Later that day it happened. Lucas was reading with his mom in his room. The book was about a dark force that has to be stopped by a magic boy, who has connections to the past. It was peaceful, when suddenly they heard commotion outside. Lucas’ mom looked out the window and said in shock, “They found us.”

Lucas got a glimpse of what was outside too. Policemen were standing around the house, and they were trying to get in. They suddenly heard a crash as the door was broken down. Lucas’s mom ran over to her son and said, “You have a power no one else has and if you can harness the energy of the luminous lights, you will save the city. Believe me, the chosen one is evil and will try to destroy you. You need a place to stay safe. Follow the river to the edge of town, and there you will find an old temple. In it is one of your dad’s old friends. Now go!” she shouted. “But-”Lucas started.

“Run!” said his mom. Lucas heard footsteps coming from the stairs as he leapt through the only window in the room, falling to the ground. Pain shot through his leg. Still,  he ran to the river and jumped in. He surfaced and watched as police cars surrounded his house. His eyes were full of tears as he floated down the canal. Gray Clouds formed in the air and rain started sprinkling on him. Fits my mood, Lucas thought. His mind turned its attention to what he knew. Lucas loved his mom, and he needed to listen to her, even if she was a prisoner and the length of the city away. Lucas had to do what his mom told him. If he could learn to harness the powers of the luminous lights, he would be able to save her. He had to find his dad’s mysterious old friend. Maybe he could tell Lucas why the chosen one wanted to eliminate him?, or tell him what he knew about his dad? Maybe he would teach him about The secret history of the shining city and why The Chosen One wanted to kill him for his powers. Lucas really wanted to know finally how to harness his abilities and why he was needed to defeat the chosen one? Lucas still was devastated by the ambush. He couldn’t hold back his tears but he also couldn’t abandon this adventure.
