Chapter 3
Lucas walked along the crescent moon canal, holding the small luminous light that his mom had placed in his jacket pocket when the government came. He was still on the poor side of the city but luckily he did not see any police cars as he cautiously maneuvered around the houses along the river. The sun lowered itself in the sky until it was no longer visible and the moon rose along with constellations of stars. Suddenly a noise rang out, “Hey, get back here!” someone yelled. Lucas immediately jumped in the canal of fear of getting caught, but it was not him the people were chasing. A girl Lucas’s age in a black cloak jumped across the rooftops of the buildings. She had a luminous light in her hand but instead of having the usual yellowish glow, it was pink, and it seemed precious. In her other hand was a bow that was ready to be shot. He had never seen one before. Lucas got out of the water, soaking wet. “that was not worth it,” He mumbled. “Hey!” Lucas waved to the girl. She noticed Lucas in the water but kept running as police cars zoomed by. Lucas wanted to follow, to figure out who she was, but he couldn't. He was tired, and his stamina had been almost drained from the walk. All Lucas could do was shiver in the cold night as the girl disappeared from view. “Who was that?” Lucas thought. He hoped to find more information on her, but for now, he needed to keep traveling. Lucas started walking again, wondering who the girl was while trying to keep walking to where the old temple laid.
At the same time, Daniel went into his workshop (aka his garage).
To find out where Lucas is, I need something that will work. Something that will help me find him and defend myself, he thought. Daniel drew up blueprints, got out his scrap materials, and started making a new gadget. Meanwhile in the Steel tower, the Chosen One was enraged that they had not caught Lucas. “Are you kidding me?! This is the child that could end my regime!” “Sorry sir,” said one of his henchmen, “He escaped, but we got his mom.”
“Just throw her in the tower. And find me that kid!!!” he shouted. He went into his office and sat down at his desk. “He’s gonna make it to him, and it's gonna be so much harder now,” he mumbled to himself.
Lucas’ legs ached from journeying. He was tired and hungry. It had been over a day since the police came and the old temple was still nowhere in sight. He wondered where his mom was, and how Daniel was reacting to this. Lucas smiled, at least they were on his side. It was just morning, right after the sunrise. Birds chirped and flew through the city. Lucas watched them as he walked. The waterway next to him shined as light from the sun reflected off of it.
A lone structure was soon in view and Lucas realized that he had reached his destination. He ran towards it, relieved that he had reached his destination, but as he got closer he slowed. The temple was covered in vines that twisted and turned on the pillars that held the building together. Broken walls had pieces missing on them, and everything felt like it was about to fall apart. Lucas was surprised. How and why would anyone live here? he thought. Hopefully he could find someone in this place. He cautiously entered the temple.
He opened the doors and saw a long hallway. The heavy doors closed with a clank behind him and Lucas walked in, hopeful that someone was there. Fortunately a light automatically turned on above him and he started to cautiously wander the halls. Suddenly the shape of a man formed in the shadows. “Huh?” Lucas said, wondering what was going on. A middle aged man with dark hair stepped out of the dark. He wore a red shirt with black shorts and he had tattoos on his left arm. He looked very strong.
“Who are you?” he asked warily.
“I’m Lucas,” replied Lucas. The much taller man looked down at him with an awkward look.
“I’m Braun”
“Why do you have a tattoo on your left arm?” Lucas told him.
“I am left-handed, it also just felt cool,”Braun said, scratching the back of his head.
“Do you live here?” Lucas asked. Braun looked back at the temple.
“ Yes, I guess it is a little old, it's perfect for training though,”
Lucas kept bombarding him with questions, getting up the nerve to ask what he really wanted to know the answers to. Lucas held a Luminous light in his pocket. Suddenly it fell out! Before it hit the ground, Lucas used his powers to make it float. He knew that Braun knew, and if this was the wrong place, he could be dead. Braun suddenly had a surprised look on his face and looked as though he recognized him at once.
“I was your dad’s friend,” he explained. I’m found him! Lucas thought, and he took a deep sigh of relief. “my name is Braun. I imagine that you have many questions. Some I can answer, some I cannot. I can help you reach your full potential and teach you what you are going to face. I fought with your dad and I know his strategies”
“So you know what happened to me?” asked Lucas. Braun pulled a crumpled newspaper out of his pocket. “Yup. Sorry kiddo. Your mom is a great woman,” Lucas raised an eyebrow at him. “So, you think she is alive?” Lucas wanted very badly to believe it might be true. “Sure as can be, but you have to stop the chosen one before he destroys the city. As for your dad’s , I cannot tell you about that now. It would just bring more pain. Are you ready to train?” he asked. Lucas’ head was spinning with all that was happening, but he nodded. “Then let's get to work! There's no time to waste,” Braun said.
Lucas worked hard to become stronger and better at controlling the luminous lights. A sign in the temple read: EVIL THRIVES WHEN THERE IS NOTHING TO STOP IT. Braun helped Lucas learn the importance of that quote. Lucas ran miles every day and practiced making shapes with his powers. He also practiced with the sword and used it against the training dummy, (for now).
As Lucas was mastering the basics of his powers the Chosen One was just getting news. “Are you kidding me?” he yelled at his underlings. “That light was one of my oldest ones. I also used it to defeat…I mean, uh, save the city! Find and capture her at once!” “...But sir,” an underling stuttered,”we don’t have the manpower to conduct two searches at once.” “Just find her, find them both!” the chosen one commanded.
Lucas created more and more shapes, each one was getting more and more complex as well. He was getting faster and better at doing these things each day. One day he noticed a newspaper in the corner of the training room. It was the same crumpled newspaper that Braun had on his first day at the temple. One headline read, “Girl Wanted for Stealing Pink Luminous Light.” Lucas wondered if it was the same girl he had seen on his journey. Braun called Lucas to the other room, so he didn’t have time to read the details. Later that day, Lucas made more things with the luminous lights. A book, which he started writing in, a flower that smelled as nice as any real one, and smaller luminous lights, which reminded him of his mom. He knew that he was special, he couldn’t let his sadness or fear get to him. He had to keep practicing manipulating the luminous lights as much as possible. After many hours he took a break and read the new newspaper. The article read, “The Chosen One has decided to do a city wide manhunt to catch the boy which he says is a threat to the city and the girl who stole an important artifact from him.” Lucas had to be careful. Everyone would be looking for him.
The inside of the old temple had four main parts. The largest was the training room. It housed all of the equipment needed to get stronger. The second room was Braun’s room, the third was Lucas’s room, and the last was storage. Lucas wrote in his book some nights, describing everything that had happened to him in his adventure. He went to sleep and dreamed about his mom and Daniel, hoping that wherever they were they were ok.
Meanwhile Daniel was not sleeping, he was busy working on his invention. He got an idea, “Aha!” he exclaimed. He got out his luminous light. “This will be the perfect power source.” Daniel placed the luminous light in the metal arm and tried it out. As he moved his fingers the arm moved with them. Daniel had made a strong force out of steel, powerful enough to knock out any enemy he might face. Daniel had seen what had happened, and he was not going to lose his best friend. His innovation had been made using his smarts, a luminous light, and the determination he had. Daniel grinned at his creation. “I’m going to find you Lucas,” he walked out of his workshop.
