Unknown Potential (Prologue)

My name is Ryaku. I live in a world where those with powers rise above the powerless. I learned the hard way that you can only survive by not trusting anybody. I’ve been betrayed countless times after trusting people. So I work alone and keep a great secret. I am one of those with powers with reason to suspect that I am one of the most powerful. Except I’m haunted by my past and my demons. I don't use my power often because I'm afraid of what I could become...no, not afraid.

    Absolutely terrified.

I watch my target walk on the street below me. It's curious. I don't usually ask questions, but I have to wonder why someone would want this girl dead. I’ve been watching her for the past week or so, and have seen no reason for her to be killed. I need the money, but I don't like killing innocents. I know her schedule, so it’s easy enough to sneak into her home and look around to see if there is a reason that someone would want her murdered. People always have reasons for wanting things. I don't like not knowing my contractor’s reason. I also don't like how my contractor told me almost nothing about this girl they want dead. I think it's quite clear they don't want someone digging into this, and they expected me to simply do my job. If that’s so, they chose the wrong person. I sleepily gaze at the sky when I hear the door to her home open and close, spiking my attention. It’s her, alright. I glance at the position of the sun and smile. She’s right on time. I grab one of the two rocks in my pocket and chuck it onto her roof. They aren’t just normal rocks- they have a magical link. Magic is what most non-ability-born use. It is, of course, outlawed in the entire kingdom, because the royals want to make sure no-one can get power to rival theirs. People don't care, though. Most of the guards don't, either, as long as you don't give them a reason to dislike you. Anyways, I take the other rock out of my pocket and wrap my hand around it.

“Please, take to me to your brethren,” I whisper.

The world spins around me and when it settles I'm on my target’s roof, with the rock I threw right between my legs. I pick it up and put both rocks back into my pocket before attempting to walk over to the skylight. I didn’t even take one step before I got hit with a wave of nausea- the side effect of teleporting. I wait a minute before trying to walk again, and nausea hit again, but this time it’s bearable. I force open the skylight using a jammer from in my bag- a tool that is both a weapon and an effective lock breaker- I grimace as I look down. It's a lot higher than I was expecting. I look around below to see if there is anything to break my fall. Nope, but there are random objects all around the room, which is strange. The girl might be an ability-born...that would explain why they want her dead...it looks as if she might be quite strong too. I need evidence first, though. These are just suspicions. I drop down and brace for the impact. The impact that never comes. I very quickly realize what has happened. If the girl is possibly a strong telekinetic, then- I suddenly spin around and slam against a wall. I can't move anything below my neck. I look over by the front door and see the girl that I was watching earlier.

“Well, what did you think was gonna happen? Breaking into someone’s house isn’t very nice, you know.”
