What we can't have

I love the rain

The way it sounds

As it splashes the ground

And beats against my roof

Bringing new life

But

It makes me miss the sun

I love the sun

The way it warms my skin

Giving me a bronze glow

The way it makes the leaves shine a brighter green

And reflects off the lake

But

It makes me miss the night

I love the night

The way the whole world is blanketed in darkness

Save for the parts of which the moon kisses

Some places the night brings calm and quiet

And for others commotion and crowds

But

It makes me miss warm summer days

Everyone wants what they can't have

But it doesn't always work that way

So savor the rain while it falls

Because eventually the dirt will become dry and cracked

And you’ll beg for the rain back

Savor the sun while it shines

Because one day in the middle of winter

When your fingers and toes are frozen

Your nose red

All you want will be to be sitting on the beach on a perfect July day

Savor the night while it's here

Because one day when you're walking on the streets of New York City

And its 114 degrees outside

You would kill for the moon to rise

And add some chill to the air
