but what we have is everything

You ask me for dinner,

You ask me for life,

You ask me for help,

Every single night.

You ask me for money,

You know we don't have,

You ask me for everything,

As if I own the world on my back.

You ask me for hours,

You ask me to come home,

You know I have to work,

Just for the things that we own.

I don't have everything,

I don't own the best stuff,

But we have what they don't,

We have what really counts

We have love, no matter what.

We run back to your house,

    The lights are still on,

And they cover your freckled face,

    Like it's the sun.

    The grass brushes our feet,

And the wind catches in your hair,

We sit out on the sand,

    The fog covers the sky,

    And blankets the world,

    Like a shield.

The waves nip at our feet,

    The water's cold

But I'm warm because you hold my hand,

    We stand on the dock,

    The sun has set,

But I can see your happiness

Even in the dead of night.

    The streetlight's on,

    The metal is all rusted

    And covered in salt,
