When History Speaks

I'm sorry.

And I guess that's all I can really say.

I watched them fall

watched and I couldn't do anything

at Columbine

at Sandy Hook

at Parkland.

I couldn't do anything

but watch

as their names turned to elegy

before they could grow old.

but I've watched your leaders

grow old in their seats

thrones built on lines

spines stiff with power

and hands too heavy to pass the torch.

I've written this chapter

over and over again

so many times

that the clock broke

before it could start ticking.

I've watched dreams and prayers

die in Congress.

Watched civilizations fall

because the old refused to turn to the young

because they refused change.

But now it's time.

I hope it is.

Maybe this time you won't be a footnote

at the bottom of the page.

Maybe this time you'll replace them

if they refuse to move.

Please.

I'm begging you.

I can't watch the children die again.

Take this cursed pen out from my hands.

Write what I can't

and what they won't.

I'll remember.

Don't worry.

I'm History.

It's the only thing I can do.

  • Death of the Cat

If curiosity killed the cat, then homo sapiens sapiens is closer to felis catus than humanity would like to admit, which is all the more reason to reach for new frontiers.

  • We the Broken, Weary Now

    The clock is broken

It stopped ticking a long time ago

stopped counting how much time has passed.

It's an old grandfather clock, oak wood, and sculpted to perfection

    carefully crafted by hands

    that belonged to men

  • Pretty

You’re pretty like sunshine and roses

But also like orchids in moonlight

    Like water reflecting the sky

Like tired nights when the wind heaves a sigh
