leaves let go

each one a page ripped out of summer's book

each one a memory that hasn't been remembered since 1969

each one a fragment of what was 

why care? they say.

it will all be humus one day

but the leaves bring color

color is for kindergarten they say

for before you realize that the world is black and white

but a black and white world knows no emotion

emotion is weak

but what is strength without weakness

in autumn

the leaves let go

those pages are torn

forever
