The one who’s headed to boarding school in the fall
With the green eyes
And big smile
Who is that girl?
Who reads books like she’s starving and the words are big, juicy cheeseburgers
And loves her little brothers
And her mom and dad
Who is that girl?
Who plays soccer with two left feet
but learned two years ago
that she loves too… mountain bike?
Who is that girl?
She’s really beautiful.
When you think about all of that.

I live in the city of Minneapolis. Like most cities, there’s light pollution, car noises, and all the other things we associate with cities.
Democracy is fragile as a house of cards with many, many layers
Many, many pieces
Many, many things that could go wrong
The slightest breath, enough to bring the whole thing crumbling
He doesn’t look at me
Like I look at him
I know exactly what he does at recess
Where he eats lunch
His middle name
I know what books he likes
What video games
I’ve slept in the same room with him
