who's going to break the silence

It's that time of year again

where some "news" are formed

and some "olds" are forgotten.

The faces of friends

become familiar again,

while last year's math formulas

do not.

We come together

to find out

if there is any sense of relatability

between us,

the people our school

calls community.

When really,

we don't have as much

in common

as they think.

Until we find out

that we do

and things change again.

But that doesn't

happen often.

Because sometimes it's easier

to stay silent

in a world

of personalities, altered

to fit an unrealistic mold.

So when it's all about connecting,

finding new people,

and asking the question "what do we have in common?"

Everyone is silent.

We want to stick

to ourselves,

our lives,

what we're used to

and what we already have.

They separate us

and force us to find connections

and it wouldn't be so hard

if people could just be honest.

They know we have

more in common

than we think,

yet our mouths

stay shut,

but our eyes

say everything.

I am 15, a rising sophomore struggling mentally. Can’t motivate myself to do much, still dreading the first day of school. I often find the phrase “I can’t” pouring out of my mouth as I feel out of control, laying in my mom’s arms.

    Not that I
