Conversation Cocktail

I've never gulped down whisky from crystaline glasses
Let it wash around and buzz under my tongue
But I've stood in the centers of circles of people
Let laughter and rowdy gossip baptize my ears
Drank in whispers riding on hundreds of breaths
And I haven't taken a flute of champagne on New Years Eve
Let the ball drop as it rolls down the back of my throat
But I've heard the sound of thousands of heels crackling on a polished floor
Lace and satin and velvet bow ties all brushing against each other
Friends who will forget tonight and all the conversations wrapped in it
Strangers who will have one face, one nudge, one dance, chisled into their minds forever
I haven't ladled myself a mug of hard cider
Sipped it by the fire on the third day of the blizzard
But I've been swaddled in people
Had conversations swathe my hips and wrap around my waist
Let rumors warm my hands, winks and grins rouge my cheeks
I've drank in people like rum and teethed on words like lime wedges

It was just a fluke that I happened to see

The ghost of a girl in 1893

I didn't think much of her, tried to ignore

But then she came 'round in 1894

A spirit was not something that I had wanted

Did you know that, when you wrote me, I was made of papercuts

That I was ink and glue and wax but mostly, I was papercuts

Did you know that, when you read me, I am made of memories
