My Acquaintance, Disappointment

My love, you’ve once again arrived

But this time only as an old acquaintance.

I’ve shaken your hand before,

The cold, defeated skin touching my own.

I recall never quite expecting your presence,

Though there was always the chance you’d drop in,

Unannounced.

You holding my hand now doesn’t feel as it did in the beginning,

Now you feel expected and reliable.

Though at times I’ve raised my fist to you,

Begging for you to stay home, letting me have my way,

I welcome you into my life

time and time again.

For only you, disappointment,

Has never disappointed me.
