Moon Hunters

"beware the Moon Hunters"
they tell me
"beware the Star Trappers"
they warn

but I take little notice
and when I do it's with scorn

beware!
take care!
be warned!
but all I do is ignore

up the mountain I go
in the dead of night
I want to see all the lights
from the top of my world

every lamp
every lantern
in the valley below
every bright bold light
every soft little glow

through the thick brush
and old fall leaves
through the deep woods
and the sparsely placed trees

finally at the top I look up
and see a most horrendous sight
the moon being roped
the stars being caught
the sky being pulled down to earth

I yearn to cry out in despair
for what do I see there?
a Moon Hunter
and Star Trappers
just like I'd been warned

I run down the mountain
till I'm back home
my sore feet pounding
from my midnight roam

they still warn me
beware
watch your back
take care of yourself

and now I listen.

Each stack higher than its former

    Every thought and every scrap

Of an idea too scared to ponder

    Each minute that lingered longer

How do I push the words out
    From behind my taffy tongue
    Thick with salty tears
    And full of grubby thumb

    I’m a child
    Pretending that I’m numb
    To escape the overwhelming feelings

    Why

When feet fall soft but quick

    Does the hallway extend

And the hot breath of whoever’s behind me feel hotter

Why do I stay pressed to the wall

    Like a stubborn gruby sticker
