Two AM.

When the clock strikes two
And everyone else is asleep
In this quiet little house
There's not a sneeze or a peep
When the clock strikes two
The world goes silent
And dark as the dead coals in the grate
When the clock strikes two
And the raindrops pitter on the the tin can roof
Telling me
"Child go get some sleep"
When the clock strikes two
And I've still got oh so much to do
I sit there clicking away
Mesmerizing screen illuminating my face
When the clock strikes two
And I know what to do
I just don't want to do it
It's only two I think
It's not that bad
But the hour passes in a blink
When the clock strikes three
Thank the lords
Bless the saints
I'm asleep
Somewhere off in my dreamland
Dancing with moonbeams
And singing with stars
When the clock strikes three.

    Looming over your shoulders

Each stack higher than its former

    Every thought and every scrap

Of an idea too scared to ponder

    Every moment that hurt

    Each minute that lingered longer

  • Inadequacy

How do I push the words out
    From behind my taffy tongue
    Thick with salty tears
    And full of grubby thumb

    I’m a child
    Pretending that I’m numb
    To escape the overwhelming feelings

    Why

When feet fall soft but quick

    Does the hallway extend

And the hot breath of whoever’s behind me feel hotter

Why do I stay pressed to the wall

    Like a stubborn gruby sticker
