Nice Girl: Hello, my name is Penelope, and I am the new girl. What is your name?

Mean Girl: My name is Charlotte and never talk to me again.

Another Nice Girl: Hi, sorry about her. I am Sophia. Where is your first class?

Penelope: Well, I am in chemistry first.

Sophia: Same here, and also my friend Ali is in that class too. Let's go meet her.

Ali: Hey, Sophia! Who did you bring with you?

Sophia: This is Penelope, Ali. Charlotte was being mean to her.

Ali: Penelope, don't worry about her. She is just a grump. Now you're with us, so you're set up for a great year!

More Than

I am not reliant, and I am not an accessory.
I am a person, not an object for you to move around the plot at your disclosure.

I am here to help to move the plot along, just like everyone else.
Too often, though, I’m simply a car.
An object used to get from one point to another as fast as possible.
One selected for beauty and functionality.
Not for personality.

I am here for a reason, and it is not to stand still.
It is not to be a statue the other characters draw inspiration from.
It is to tell my story, to develop further than a couple of thoughts from my head or - heaven forbid! - the smallest expression of my individuality.

I am here to support my fellow characters, but not at the expense of myself.
I am not the cheerleader off to the sides of the game, unable to do a thing.
I am your teammate.
I can make plays, too.
I can take action.
And yet, I am not allowed to.

Don’t ignore me

I would want to see more of Alexandru Proca. He was the first person that came up with nuclear physics. He is a pretty cool guy. They should make a story of him. He is a person I look up to. If I came up with a nuclear power plant, well I would use it for good. Alex did his work for good. He is a person I want to be like. He is a genius. I think he is a god. But, oh well.

Hello there! I think that I, Rue, should be shown more in The Hunger Games. In the book, I appeared more and had narration dedicated to me. In the movie, I hardly get any at all! I think that I should get more screen time in The Hunger Games because I think I am a likeable person fans love. I am kind, a little shy, and very helpful. I also may not be a main character, but I am a significant secondary character! I think I play a big part in helping Katniss win the Games. If I didn’t warn Katniss about the tracker jacker nest, then she wouldn’t have been able to escape from the Careers. If I wasn’t around when Katniss was stung by the tracker jackers, she most likely would have died from her wounds- or the hands of another tribute. Thank you for listening!

Hey! Give me a chance. I know everyone hates me, but I know at least someone... somewhere cares about me, but there are reasons why I killed myself. No one cared, that I knew about, until I killed myself. I regret what I did. What I did I didn’t think would hurt anyone. What I did, I had reasons to do it. I thought nobody cared about me, everyone hated me. Please just give me a chance... I wish I could change everything. I regret what I did.

Hey! Stop telling my beloved citizens that I’m bad. It’s a tough job having to fix everybody’s problems. I try to be good at my job, but it can be hard with all the false media. You people try to find everything that’s wrong with me, but nobody’s perfect. I try to keep a filter of what I say on social media, but it’s too difficult when other people don’t try. If I’m so bad, why don’t you look at the stock market stats since I’ve been in office. I have done many great things for this country, and I will continue to help our great nation strive, if only you’d give me a chance.

More of a Lark than a Dove

She is a
hope-spot,
bright with meaning.
Beyond a tool
to serve others,
beyond a lost child
to be rescued
or a maiden fair
to strive for,
she exists for herself.
She survives
the enclosing
darkness
of a childhood
in servatude,
unloved,
beaten and ignored.
There is no
weakness
in her joy,
her growth,
her luminescent love.
There is no resignation
or timidness
in her soul.
She is a fighter
whose fight has been
maligned by
centuries of sexism.
She is a pillar
of strength,
a ray of inspiration
working
to pull others
out of the
desolate night
she once escaped.
She is the dream
of a better tomorrow
and the promise
that someday
this will all heal.

Her world, the color dreams, drags her as if a submissive dog
attatched to an unfirgiving leash
through cities of salt and pepper
through twisting and turning allies stamping names on her cover
not daring to flip through the pages
through the days and nights of routines
all she knows
plastered with make up to hide the puddles of blue under
faded eyes
her name means nothing
unimportant and meaningless, replaced by the another
the names on albums and movies, not in her home
a rainforest of people surrounding her
calling an unknown name
demanding a new song, a new masterpiece
squeezing the last from the toothpaste tube
sucking the well dry, day after day, year after year
till she is old, a name to search
a frail figure left without a spirit, without her lifeline
routine crumbling into disorder, impeccable beauty into dismay,
and an account of riches, to a wheelbarrow of paperclips
