I wish I knew you

I wish I knew you.
I wish that I could feel your hands in mine.
Warm and soft.
I wish I knew your silly secrets.
Your favorite food.

How you and your sister used to whisper after your parents had turned off the lights.
How you broke your leg and your mother sat beside you
Kissing your tears away.
I wish I knew the things that made you scared.
So I could sit by you
Stroke your hair and tell you that everything would be alright.
I wish that I could make you happy.
Bring smiles to your eyes.

Maybe we have passed by each other.
Maybe you’ve been on the other side of the court
While I was dribbling the ball down.
Your body radiated toughness
But in your eyes
Words flowed through
Longing to be recorded
To be remembered.

Maybe we walked past each other on a cold day.
Your scarf wrapped tightly around your cold face.
But your eyes knew my eyes.
Your soul recognized the spirit in my soul.
The wish for change.
But then maybe you disappeared into a coffee shop and I never saw you again.
Perhaps I kept on walking.

But we had changed each other’s lives.

Maybe I’ll find you someday.
And we will talk about the future
And laugh about the past.

I wish I knew the person that you could be.

I wish I knew you.
