prescription (go sailing)

sometimes i think just one sunny day would cure me of everything.

other days i think pills and tonics and treatments are lies that i continue to swallow.

most days i just daydream about last summer when our tiny sunfish

cut across the clear blue lake on an unusually bright

summer day, july i think, and the wind stayed behind us

and water droplets beaded cool on the sides of the boat as we

traced circles on champlain like a figure skater in the wrong season

and i laughed and hung onto the side and trailed my fingers

through the waves and everything was gone

except the sun and the shore and the sailboat.

do away with medicine, dear doctors.

the only thing you should prescribe is one sunny day, to be taken

around eleven a.m., on a sailboat,

headed nowhere but into the light.
