In which a woman and world burn
“The emotional toll of wildfires can be profound, leaving scars that linger long after the flames have been extinguished.” — Jennifer Balch

From Far Away
the lights become
a tiny universe.
Individual lives
swirl together
and overlap
until they fit in the palm of my hand.
Nothing but specks of color

running over sea and tree and canyon
intricate lines forming diamonds, spiderweb shine
defying
gravity
each arch at a time.

and flinch like it’s a stranger
like the face staring back
should apologize for existing
there’s a weight in my chest
that has nothing to do with flesh
and everything to do -
The Third Grader
Raincoat like the petals of a sunflower hangs to her knees
Glittery rainbow headband
That only keeps half her hair back
Shiny pink nails
Strawberry boots
Shy smile that makes you feel lucky you got to see it
