Australian youth younger than 16 are now barred from having social media accounts. What is your opinion? What do you think the effect will be? Should the U.S. consider a similar law?


The new law, passed a year ago and in effect as of December 2025,  Dec. 10, Hundreds of thousands of teenagers in Australia awoke Wednesday to find their social media accounts log requires the technology companies behind the platforms — Facebook, Instagram, Kick, Reddit, Snapchat, Threads, TikTok, Twitch, X and YouTube — to identify and disable the accounts of Australian users who are under 16. Under the law, failure to take “reasonable steps” to remove underage users could lead to fines of up to $33 million.
