At the end of the summer
We light a candle
Make a wish
Hold tight to a memory
And watch it float away.
I wish it didn’t have to end
That I’d never had to say goodbye
That I could hold on to memories
That would never slip away
Into the unconscious.
I remember watching my candle fade away
Happy memories against dark waters
I try to cling to them
But nothing good can stay forever
I can’t stand here
Wishing
Hoping
For eternity.
