Always second best

Today,

I told my dad about something I made.

I told him it was the second best in my class.

And I was proud of it.

But he said to put in more effort

Well, there's only so much that can be done in two hours.

The day before,

I tried out for the solo in choir.

He said that it would never be perfect.

The week before,

I was playing baseball with my brother.

My dad said that my brother hit the ball harder,

Even when mine went several yards farther.

I was always second best to somebody.

    Today I lost a friend,

And I don’t know how it happened.

Last week she gave me a bracelet-

    saying we’d always be friends.

Now she’s talking about me behind my back.
