An apple is
A reminder
A token to bring you back
To the day in the orchard
When you were six years old
Sitting on your dad's shoulders
Reaching for an apple
That you had decided was perfect
And you were never going to eat it
Just look at it
But your hunger got the best of you
While your parents talked
To friends of theirs
The apple
Tastes like apple cider
The apple cider you had
On that day in the orchard
It warmed your hands
As the wind blew around you
Causing the leaves to dance
And brightening the tip of your nose
An apple
Fits in your palm
You don't need two hands to hold it
You used to though
You used to have to cup it
In both palms
In order for it to stay put
Sometimes you would forget
And it would drop to the muddy ground
It would roll away
And your mom would say
How you can't eat it now
Because it's dirty
Sometimes you'd cry over your lost apple
Other times you would just have your mom
Hoist you up to grab another
An apple
Is the memories of fall
Wrapped into a sphere
