Fifteen years ago I moved
I was two years old
Now I am seventeen
The big city kid
It's hard to believe a town of 44,597
Can be considered a city.
Being a big-city kid
Comes with benefits
I know how to walk alone
And be scared to be followed
While knowing what it's like
To watch fireworks fill the sky
And church street fills with the songs of change.
I know what it's like to walk through UVM
Watch frat bros playing ping pong in hardly any clothing
See teens dressed in shiny dresses
On their way to slamming parties
Where everyone goes home drunk.
As a big-city kid, I have seen
Stores go under due to COVID
And chains taking their place
Christmas trees filling up parking lots
And Santa in Homeport wishing shoppers happy holidays.
For fifteen years I have called this place home
And in three I will say goodbye
Bound for a dorm room in another city
But I will always remember my city
Keep these memories locked in a special place in my heart.
