INT: Aaron's Bed Room.

“What’s your problem!?” Aaron shouted.
Throwing his phone across the room and standing up.
“He made it clear ok?" He said raising his voice. "My father doesn’t care about me! thats how i got into the foster system in the first place.”  He swung his arms around wildly. “And more importantly- " he said laughing "I'm 14 years old! I don’t care about him. I don't need a father! I don’t care he’s in jail again. I’m not responsible for him and I don’t give a snot wad what happens to him!”

“No Aaron I don’t think you see how much this is hurting you” 16 year old Cassidy Said. Standing up and moving towards him. He glowered at her from his place. "I'm your foster sisters best friend, but Your my younger brother. I care about you, and I think you do care that your fathers back in prison"
“Get out of my room.” he said. Pointing towards the door.
“I can’t do that.”
“Get out of my room!” He yelled walking towards the door.
“No.” Cass Said gently. “You don’t have to go through this all over again all alone Aaron. We’re here for you, I’m here for you”
“I don’t need anybody Cassidy.” He said coldly, and turned around.
“You don’t realize you need someone until you lose them.” She answered.
They stared at each other.
“Your father was important to you Aaron. And you just lost him. It hurts.” she said softly.
“Oh my god I don’t need this from you! who are a freaking Ted Talk persont!?"
She leaned against his desk and sighed. “Fine. You win. Maybe one day I’ll realize your dad didn’t leave a positive impression on you. I mean- like you said- He wasn’t a good remodel” Cass new she struck a nerve.

“What did you just say” Aaron Said slowly. darkly.

“He wasn’t a good role model. And that’s being generous. All the times he made you empty promises, ‘we’ll go here Aaron’ ‘We’ll see this Aaron’. None of it ever happened. You get a few games of catch, a burger and fries, and a bowling night and all the sudden he thinks he’s the Elvis of fathers.”
She inspected the desk.
“I see why you wouldn’t be 'sad' to see him go to prison. There’s nothing your loosing really, He’s one big mess up, and a horrible person.” She looked at him. “No wonder you don’t care about him.”  She said coldly.

Aaron charged her.

“My father is not a mess up ok!?” Aaron Said fiercely, grabing her arms and pinning her to the dresser “He might not have been the best guy but he really tried! He always tried! He got out of jail and he found me in foster care that’s the first thing he did,” Cass tripped him and shoved him away. "he never kept his promises" She argued.

"Yes he did!" He exclaimed, and shoved her. "and after he found me he looked for a job, and once he got a job he looked for a house and he got to visit me! ” He said. Cass shoved him back “He’s a role model cause he worked his ass off to show everyone he can do it all by himself without my mother. He worked 3 jobs!" He pushed her agian, and she smacked into his book case. Odds and ends came crashing down. A picture frame fell from the wall and broke.

"He’s not perfect!" Aaron said getting in Cass's face, "and not nearly as good a father as some other people-“ he added, shaking her shoulders.
“but he’s all I got and I love him! I can’t lose him again not know!!”
He was inches from her face and brougth his fist up by her head. But Cass new he wouldn't hit her. He would never delibritaly hurt anyone. slowly, pained realization dawned on his face.

“I can’t lose him again.” He repeated weakly. Cass slipped out from his grasp and moved away. Aaron slid his hand down the side of the wall, breathing hard.
"I can't-" He shook his head, and stumbled away from the book case.
"why'd he have to do this" he questioned. pain enveloping each word.
“I can’t do it again” He racked his fingers through his hair slowly. He teetered on his feet. All the anger drained away.
Aaron stepped on something and looked down to find the broken frame. He looked around his room at the results of the fight they just had. He hiccuped. His desk was turned upside down, books and other itmes littered the floor.
He looked at Cass. Her lip was bleeding. She was rolling her right shoulder and blinking.
She gave him a small sad knowing smile.
"No" He breathed, ashamed at the damage. He went up to Cass and gingerly touched her cheek where a bruise blossomed. she grimaced. "No." he said again
“I’m sorry” he whispered.
He covered his face with his hand and stepped back. “Oh Cassidy - I’m so sorry I-“ his words died in his throat.

“You don’t realize you need someone until you lose them.” She said quietly.

He could no longer hold back his tears.
Cass wrapped him in a sisterly hug and Aaron melted into her arms. They stayed there for awhile, Aaron hugging her fiercly. The she lead him to the bed where they sat at the edge. Aaron crying with heaving sobs. “I can’t do it again," as he cried into her shoulder.
Cass stroked his hair and rocked him back and forth as he clung to her.
He didn’t remember his foster family come into the room. He didn't  remember them stroking his hair and embracing him with hugs and kisses. He didn’t remember apologizing for leaving Cass’s shirt wet with tears and snot, or her laughing about it and wiping away her own tears. He was angry, confused, scared and sad. Which all resulted in a blubbering mess of tears.
But through it all he felt safe, and loved.

Aaron woke up to Cass sleeping next to him on one side, one arm resting protectivly around his shoulder. The rest of the family spread out in various places in the room. He knew they would never leave him, and always love him. They'd help him get through this. And he truly loved all of them for that.

  • A Space Among The Stars

To live in a space among the stars
    I'd have to get binoculars
To see the dentist on the moon
And find the next Uber at noon.
To live in a space among the stars
I'd have to float to school in cars.
  • Frost

    Its fingers were hot
    and cold and
    sweet and dark.
    All at the same time.

    Sleeeeep.

    It whispered in her ear.
    Her petals shivered.
    Its breath ran slowly
    down
    her stem and
    tickled a leaf.
