The fiery sunset gleamed in the heart of the evening while the sparkling rain reflected its capturing glow. The girl, graciously curled up in her wooden window seat, which was carefully decorated with vintage floral pillows, stared out beyond the horizons, farther than her eyes could see, her arms could reach, her mind could comprehend. Her eyes glistened with limitless fascination and wonder as if she could see the entire world unfolding before her. She listened as each raindrop delicately tapped the window, and with it cracked open slightly, could feel the coolness of the faint breeze. Her record player hummed softly in the background, and the soothing voice of Frank Sinatra engulfed the room with warmth. The sound of light footsteps running up the stairs met the girl’s ears and she turned to notice her boyfriend approaching the doorframe. His alluring black hair shined with the assistance of the chandelier, as his deep green eyes visibly brightened with joy at the sight of his girlfriend. “My angel!” he exclaimed. “There looks to be quite the lovely surprise waiting for you outside.” He grinned cheerfully. The girl’s face softly sparked with excitement and she slowly rose to meet her boyfriend at the door. She greeted him with a light hug and said, “Well, then let’s go see what it is, shall we?” They keenly leapt out of the room into the dimly lit hallway, twirling each other down the stairs with smiles glued to their faces. As they danced nimbly through the kitchen and reached the front door, the boy quickly looked back at his girlfriend before opening the door to reveal a beautifully arranged picnic. The boy kicked up water as he ran out into the damp grass with his arms wide open, receiving the moderate rain pouring down on his shirt. Humidity thickened the air that made its way into the house where the girl stood silently, unsure whether or not to step outside yet. She believed it was raining quite a bit and was concerned about the weather. She crossed her ankles as her eyes traveled from her boyfriend’s face to the brown wicker basket sitting on the blanket, to the sun’s radiance in the distance. The musky smell of the rain flooded the girl’s nose while she contemplated what to do. Her boyfriend’s illuminating eyes invited the hesitant girl to come join him in the rain, but he could tell something was off so he went over to comfort her. “What is wrong, love?” He asked worriedly. “It’s raining a bit hard, is it not?” the girl responded nervously, but not upset at all; she was flattered by her boyfriend’s delightful gesture. The boy smiled, knowing this may have been the reason the girl was apprehensive. “But darling, why not live? Life is too short not to,” he said quietly. He smiled gently, his gaze full of tenderness as he stepped closer. The girl looked up at her boyfriend, face beaming with enthrallment. She grinned and put out her hand for her boyfriend to walk her to the yard, but instead, with a sudden spin, he lifted her off of the ground. For a moment, she felt weightless, surrounded by only the whisper of the rain and the comfort of his arms. The girl laughed with excitement as her boyfriend held her in the air until he brought her down, and they shared a warm glance before sitting down to enjoy their magical picnic in the enchanting rain.

baby dandelions
golden like the sun,
blooming in the spring,
till they turn to fuzz,
flying in the wind.
what our parents call weeds,
what we called flowers when we were young.
