Chapter one ~ Ivanna
I look at myself in the mirror, green eyes, baggy jeans, my Maine tshirt, and a messy bun of brown hair on my head. Trying to take deep breaths, as I come out of my room to go make sure the guest room’s ready. Two twin beds, black comforters with little dark green floral prints. My friend Lyra, whom they would meet had helped me pick them out. I pulled out my phone 2:40. They would be here in 20 minutes. I scrolled through the group chat to make sure I had given them the right address. Yup. I slowly trudge to the kitchen and turn on my coffee maker.I reach up to my mug cabinet and grab my starry night mug. As I grab the pot I can hear the doorknob turning and keys jangling. I walk over to the door and open it, at the door is Lyra, with her dark red hair and bright smile. She looks around sensing that I did some redecorating.
“I originally came to check in on you, because of the you know, Leo situation,” Lyra said looking around. “Now I can see how big of a deal it is. He was your best friend. How long until they get here” She said, hanging up her coat, and plopping herself onto a barstool.
I glance at my phone. “About fifteen minutes. I need coffee” I said plopping onto her lap staring at the coffee maker.
She glances at me, wrapping her arms around me.
“No, you just need me to stay with you for the next two weeks.”
“Yes, but I need coffee.”
“Iv, your face is as red as a tomato, you need to calm down, you have 10 minutes.”
“I need to make more coffee for them I think.”
“You just need to chill. Again”
As she says that there’s a knock on the door, I jump up and run to it, Lyra just sits where she is and rolls her eyes. I continue the five feet ahead of me, wondering who it is at the door. It could be anyone of the six. I’m filled with every emotion ever created as I reach for the doorknob. I take a deep breath and open the door. There stands Leo, backpack swung over his shoulder and suitcase next to his leg, he was now about six five, still with the ‘I just woke up’ hair. He had his grin excited, and his hand waving.
“Ivanna!” He pulled me into a hug, a very sweet hug, that made me want to kiss him. But he didn’t think I still liked him… right? “I missed you so freaking much!”
“Bet not more than I missed you!” I look at him with probably a stupid grin, he brings me into a tighter hug. I can feel Lyra’s eyes on me, most likely smirking.
“It’s Leo right?” She comes up behind me. “I’ve heard so much about you! I can basically tell your life story by now.” I turn my head and glare at her. “All right! I’ll play bellhop and bring his suitcase to Ivann- I mean the guest room.” GOD. LYRA. WHY.
Leo’s grin turned into a smirk then. “All right if you insist.” I knew that was a joke. He finally let go of me and released me from the hug. I was honestly sad, I felt safe in his arms, they were warm from his body heat because well, as we used to call him and Mara, ‘human heaters’.
We walked into the living room/kitchen/dining area where Lyra was already sitting flipping through channels most likely muttering about how there’s nothing good on.
“Ivanna. Sit.” she patted to the seat next to her on the couch. I rolled my eyes, then turned towards Leo.
“Do you want any coffee?” I said, making my way towards the coffee maker.
“Sure, only if it’s not a problem.” He said hanging up his coat and scarf, making his way behind me. “It will probably taste better than when I make it… Because you made it. ” I’m pretty sure I melted, as Lyra stifled a laugh.
Lyra, making her way to be perched on the barstool like the queen of judgment she is, smirked. “Ooooh, smooth, Leo. Very subtle. I see what you’re doing.” I groaned into my mug. Smooth? I was literally about to spill hot coffee on my shirt. Subtle? Hardly.
Leo leaned a little closer, peeking at me over my shoulder. “Don’t worry, I’ll be a very patient coffee taster.” I nearly dropped the pot on the ground. I tried to change the subject after realizing Evan wasn’t here yet.
“Where’s Evan?” I say realizing that he didn’t come with Leo.
“He decided to get a hotel room at the same hotel the girls were staying.”
“Oh.” Of course he was. Now Leo and I are sharing an apartment for the next two weeks.
There was a sudden knock on my door, Lyra springs up to open it. cue Mara, Ria, Verena, Emily and Evan enter. They look at Lyra.
“Ivanna- you look different.” Verena says, looking at Lyra. They must think I’m Lyra.
“Actually,” Lyra begins. “I am not Ivanna, Ivanna is in the kitchen
making a pot of coffee for all of you, and I’m pretty sure Leo’s dropping pick up lines well she’s at it.” Lyra spins on her heels and points dramatically toward the kitchen. “Over there! You’ll see the real Ivanna trying not to melt into a puddle while serving coffee and surviving Leo’s flirting.” I roll my eyes and go over to see everyone. I got ambushed by 5 people in a huge hug.
There were mixes of laughter and I’m pretty sure Ria almost started crying- or maybe Emily.
Suddenly Lyra comes up behind me and proceeds to yell “GUYS THERE’S DANCE WE SHOULD ALL GO TO TONIGHT AT IV’S AND MY SCHOOL!” I turn to face, holy shit. I forget about that. “They don’t give a fax about who goes too!”
“That would be so much fun!” Evan said, grabbing Verena’s hand and kissing it “M’lady Verena, will you go to this dance with me?” Verena and the rest of us started laughing.
“But of course!” She said in a fake accent, “I would be honored!”
I wish Leo would do that for me, except, well, I don’t think he really, honest to god, doesn’t care for me like I do for him.
`”Do y’all wanna go find our outfits? Well, most of us packed nice stuff!” Ria says, running over to Emily-her bff since forever.
“YES! We totally should!” After they said that, Evan, Verena, Emily, Ria, and Mara left, grabbing their coats, saying that they’ll meet us back here at 5’o clock sharp. It was about 2 hours until then.
“Well, I will be back with you-know-who…..” Lyra says winking at me, I know who it was, her boyfriend, Mark.
That just left me, and Leo.
“Well, um… Do you want something to eat?” I asked Leo sheepishly.
“Sure, you want help making something?” He asked.
“Sure, that's chill.”
“You wanna make pancakes?”
“Waffles. Always.”
“Of course, I forgot how much you loved them. Actually no, I had waffles a few nights ago in your honor.”
“You wanna watch a movie?”
“Sure! What do you want to watch?”
“We should watch 10 things I hate about you.”
“You still love that movie?”
“You’re acting like you don’t know me.” I go over to the cupboard and grab pancake mix, and a bowl. Leo walks over to the fridge and grabs the eggs.
We made the batter for the waffles and while Leo flipped one, Kat’s poem came on “I hate the way you talk to me, I hate the way you cut your hair, Mostly I hate the way I don’t hate you. Not even close, not a little bit, not even at all.” Leo had recited it with her. I was shocked he knew it, we used to watch it, but I’m still surprised that he knew it by heart pretty much.
We ended up eating in about ten minutes, then we decided to go get ready for the dance.
I took out my hoco dress. It was a wine red satin, with those sleeves you imagine when you think of the renaissance. Well, I believe they are called balloon sleeves, there were lots of black sewn on flower prints on the sleeves. I had my dark brown hair thrown into two french braids, which lead to wavy pigtails. I did make up with necessities, like foundation, concealer, and bronzer. But I did add a bit of eyeliner, and silver eyeshadow. I grab my black heels and walk out into the living area. Leo’s standing there, crisp, clean navy suit. His hair was still that lazy, I just woke up looking, yet, it looked perfect. I stood there, feeling so awkward. His whole outfit was breathtaking.
