It Only Lasts So Long

One night,

Every session,

Of every summer,

We go stargazing.

I look up at the sky and try to see everything,

I try to take in the moment,

It only lasts so long.

My counselor's syrupy voice reading a meditation none of us do,

The constant beat of Spotify chill playlists on a JBL speaker,

The roundness of the sky,

The exact shade of blue and purple and black the sky is that night,

The warmth of the tennis court on my back,

The feel of your hand in mine,

Tiny squeezes that say;

I love you,

Please never leave  me.

And just as it began,

Just as I began to relax and reflect as I was asked to do,

It is time to go,

And we whisper run up to the bunk,

A magical hush of joy seems to blanket all of us,

And I wish we could do it everyday,

Every night,

Every summer,

Forever.
