Look It In The Eye

You may not understand

What it is

To look your future in the eye

And have it blink

To not know

If your rights

Will be your rights

Next year,

But you should care.

I understand that not everything can be

Certain

That the world will

Shift

With time and people and decisions but some things should be

Rights.

When you vote

Consider the girls

Falling asleep

Wondering about the world

They will wake up to

Consider the women

Whose decisions don’t need to be harder

Consider the dominoes you start knocking over

By filling in that bubble on that piece of paper.

Look the choice in the eye

And you should flinch at the weight

Of the decision that is yours.

I only ever came here for the fortune cookies

I don't know if you can tell

when I stare at the menu

under shiny plastic with a red rim

    when I glance

up I can tell you're reading the Mandarin

  • In that Field

    It never happened

that everything was beautiful and nothing hurt

but if it did it would have been

    lying in the grass

the kind that surrounds you like the ocean

    and flows like a river

We have something to learn from

    while he peeled his banana

and ate it in five bites

and gave us all high fives)
