Look for the pink

It's when we're

driving along

and it's the break of morning

when the sun hasn't been awake for long enough

to have warmed your still asleep body.

Or it's when we're

driving along

and the sun's about to set or maybe

just has

and your body's preparing itself

to go to sleep.

It's when we're having those conversations

where I say something not-so-great

and you respond with another

slightly different still not-so-great thing

and we're in a circle of not-so-great.

But that's when we break

out of the woods onto a stretch

of blank road like a canvas

ready for today

to paint on it

or turn the corner where you can see

just over the trees and the town.

That's when I see

the pink

the bright pink

that fills in the shallow spot made by

two mountains

it is the lake

in the gray sky

the oasis

the calm.

I see the pink and it wakes me up

look at the pink

I say to you

and we

look at the pink

and I hope you smile the way I smile

when I stop for a second and

look at the pink.
