Every morning started the same way.
The same sound of my mom’s voice acting as an alarm clock.
“Did I finish the cereal yesterday?” I wondered as I got ready.
I brushed my teeth, got dressed, and packed my bag just like every morning.
I gained a feeling of urgency as I sensed my dad’s growing frustration that we were taking so long.
Downstairs I was always met with two wagging tails.
I poured my cereal that I fortunately did not finish as my brother grumbled his way into the kitchen to do the same.
Shoes on and we were out the door and into dad’s truck that was almost too tall for my little legs.
Pouring out of the radio was country music, old and new.
The three of us sang along in between conversations.
We passed the baseball field with Luke Combs.
We passed Coburns’ with Jamie Johnson.
We pulled into the school’s driveway with Johnny Cash.
We grabbed our bags, said goodbye, and left for the day.
Eventually the song had to end.
