Mr. Boots

By Owen Young

Mr. Boots was a white teddy bear with little red boots. Pearce brought him everywhere. He pushed Mr. Boots on the swing in his backyard. He held Mr. Boots close during the scary parts of his TV shows. At night when he was supposed to be sleeping, Pearce whispered in Mr. Boots’s ear. Sometimes Mr. Boots whispered back.

Years passed; Pearce got older, and Mr. Boots moved from his bed to his bookshelf. There were new things to play with--a basketball, an iPad, and a 3 DS. Then strange things started to happen. Pearce went to use his iPad one day and saw that the screen was cracked, and he found Mr. Boots on his bed waiting for him. Now Pearce was suspicious. But teddy bears can’t do this, right? Later when he wanted to use his 3 DS, he found it in a sink full of water. Again, he found Mr. Boots on his bed. Now Pearce was really scared, but teddy bears can’t do these things, right?

Another day he was on his swing and he heard hissing from the backyard. He went back and sitting in a muddy puddle was his basketball, deflated and shredded. Later, he went to his room and saw Mr. Boots’s red boots covered in mud on his bed. Now Pearce was really scared.

Later, on his family vacation he opened his suitcase and found Mr. Boots inside. So on the last day of vacation, he buried Mr. Boots on the beach. Mr. Boots didn’t come back.

After a while, Pearce forgot all about Mr. Boots. He figured it was his imagination. Eventually, he went to college, met a girl, got married and had a son named Charlie. One snowy night Pearce woke up because he heard whispers from Charlie’s room. Giggles. Pearce didn’t think much of it because Charlie was an imaginative child just as he had been. Pearce went back to sleep.

The next morning Charlie was gone. Pearce and his wife searched the whole house and found nothing. Then they went outside and in the freshly fallen snow they could see his footprints leading off into the woods and next to them were the kind of footprints made with little red boots. They never saw Charlie again.
