My Love

It’s comparable to a genius fleeting thought
That wiggled its way into one ear
Then out the other- then gets lost in the void
Between what I ate for breakfast
And if I took my medication.
By the time I locate where it rests,
the fleeting thought isn’t even a priority.

That's what love is like now-
Constant efforts to find that something
Except you’re not quite sure what it is.
In the couple seconds it takes
To create it and relish in its glory-
You get distracted and it leaves
Until your conscious deems it acceptable
To remind you of it in the distant future.
Often it doesn’t come back at all.

When the moment comes that
My lover realizes my love is like
A lost instruction manual that guided me
(Actually, it’s crumpled under the bed
But I won’t find it until I hide from myself again)
To construct a sturdy foundation
To a someday beautiful entity-
They’ll realize it won’t be worth it,
Finding then desperately trying
To keep the fleeting thought.
I realize it isn’t worth it,
Finding then desperately trying
To keep my love.
