No Ordinary Day

By Liivo Gorczyk

As soon as I opened my eyes, I sensed this was no ordinary day. I sprang out of bed. The radio was blaring an emergency signal. “Hurricane!” the message screamed. I scrambled down the hallway to a window facing the street. I gaped at the wind driving the rain and branches down the road. Just then an electrical pole exploded hurling sparks into the air.

The water surged and raged down the street. In a moment, the window that had peered onto the street began to pivot. I seized the chair next to me when I realized the entire house was drifting from its foundation. I could hear the wind clawing at the roof as shingles were torn away. Smash! I whipped around to see an alligator thrown through the window at the opposite end of the hallway. It was charging at me. Its tail slammed and thrashed against the walls. I staggered back, hoping to evade its chomp. It had my foot, and all I could hear now were my bones splintering.
