she came up behind me one day & tapped me on the shoulder
i spun on my heel, unsteady, a dumb american consistently
ashamed of my language
she pointed at my face and drew a heart in the air with her thumbs
beautiful she said in her jam-thick accent far sweeter
than my own and she smiled with her teeth and i felt
my cheeks flush with a grin and that is ultimately
the best compliment i will ever receive, from someone
i can't say a word to otherwise,
and isn't that just about the saddest beautiful thing?

This is amazing! I so completely agree that it is the saddest beautiful thing, and I'm so grateful I got to read it
thank you so much!! :D i'm glad that my poem got to be a happy part of your day
This is such a sweet poem full of nostalgia for something that has only just happened (seemingly) but the narrator knows will likely not happen again. It's really well composed :)
thank you!! yeah this happened a few days ago and i was like dumbstruck so obviously had to write a poem lol
