Sibling Sweetness

Two many were awake

Fall with dark coffee

keeping their eyes wide

Spring with sweet tea

Keeping their face bright

So Fall left their room

Leaving painted leaves to dry

So Spring left their room

Leaving birds and bugs to rest

Fall went down the stairs

Slow and soft like drifting leaves

Spring went down the stairs

Quick and loud like buzzing bees

Then the other saw another

They saw eachother

Spring wrapped in flower petals

Closed over their figure like a bud

Fall covered in dirt and moss

Climbing up their figure like a tree trunk

Fall frowned at the sight of the younger

Hooded eyes filled with disappointment

Spring hid their face

But their brightness made it pointless

The scolding started

Summer had awoken

So Spring was meant to sleep

Spring could only squeak

Softer than a newborn mouse

That Fall was also up

Fall rolled their eyes

Spring knew they were not fooled

Of course Fall was awake

They were next to change the sky and ground

But Spring’s shift had long since passed

So why were they so bright

Fall knew the reason

They were the oldest afterall

They knew how Spring worked to hard

Even when their time was done

But when Fall saw the tears

Forming in Spring’s eyes

They sighed and took a step

Towards their youngest sibling

And embraced them

Spring began to sob

Begging for forgiveness

Begging that for the older to not tell anyone

Especially not Mother Earth

Fall stayed quiet

Letting Spring shed sweetened tears

Creating a puddle beneath the two

Before finally uttering anything to their saddened kin

Spring calm down

There's no need for fear

You do so much for the family

And it’s hard to let go of those duties

Even when your work is through

I understand

Of course I do

I was once just like you

Spring went silent with shock

But then they began to think

That it made such sense

Fall was older and had been the first

To walk beside their Mother Earth

Once they were the one

Doing all that’s to be done

How did you learn to let go

Spring murmured after moments

Into Fall’s now damp chest

Fall laid their hand on Spring head

And stroked their hair as they spoke

Rotations ago

When Winter was newly born

Mama found me

crying in my room

Upset by snow covering my painted leaves

Wishing Winter was gone

And that I was still the only long night wanderer

But Mother knew

What was my real problem

I wasn’t used to rest

I didn’t know how

To finally lay down

After so long being the only one to usher in the chill

So Mother took my hands

Into her own stained with dirt

And whispered softly in my ear

My child grab your pillow

My child grab your blanket

My child cuddle close

So I did

Though slow and sad

But Mom just waited

Patient as ever

Once I was finally in my bed

She sat right down beside me

And hummed a sound

I had heard many times before

The song of singing beetles

And I was weak to fight

The sleep that creeped into my eyes

And held me through the night

When Fall was done speaking

They leaned down to Spring

Spring looked up at Fall

Knowing what to do

So together the seasons walked

RIght back up the stairs

Over to Spring’s room

Where birds and bugs still slept

So Fall made sure to whisper

To not awake them

Spring grab your pillow

Spring grab your blanket

Spring cuddle close

So Spring did

Their footstep deafened by loamy dirt

Fall waited by the door

A soft smile on their face

Soon Spring was ready

Swaddled in their sheets

And Fall sat down beside them

And began to hum a sound

they both had heard before

The sound of buzzing beetles

And soon they both dozed off

Right as Summer woke
