To Truly Be

How do I explain

that doubled over laughter

none of us

can play volleyball but

all of us

can laugh

and s'mores

you asked me

what I was doing

I was doing

it all wrong

you said

but like friends say

but like friends offer

you made me a s'more

it took three marshmallows

to get it right

but it was right

and with most people I might

get mad

but sometimes it just goes right

lucky you

and you

you're telling me how (not in those words) much you love

your sister

and your eyes shine a bit

and I think I'll like her

and you

you just want to prove yourself

to your brother with everything

you have

he loves you

I hope you know

so it's all perfect

and I think the only way to be

that happy

is not to remember

the sad confused facetimes under the covers

and not to worry through every root and rock of my race tomorrow

and yes they're still

part of me

but let's let them be

let's be

happy.

  • The stone and the river

They said to think about who you are

And who you want to be

    After camp

    And I thought

    What if I don’t know

The changes I want to happen to me?

    What if change

    Is best

    Faced like the wind

  • Legacy

I hope that our legacy is our effort to love, that it is the times we held umbrellas above other peoples heads and shared whatever food we had and pointed out the stars.

  • A Hug of People

    We didn't know the guy

    in the truck

    who's that guy?

    my sister asked,

and I wondered if city people

    expected to know everyone

    they saw around town.
