When I'd Go

They all say they'd visit dinosaurs

go back and dig for gold

meet their great-great-great grandparents

be around when electricity was discovered.

When the question is asked

at get-to-know-you circles,

I'll say that's what I want too,

and it will mostly be true.

Except I'll always think

of when I was five

or nine

or eleven

or even last summer when I had less

on my mind

in my head

less to think about.

What if I went to then

and watched myself be little

with innocence,

and soaked up the rich gold of youth?

  • Dinner with You

I only ever came here for the fortune cookies

I don't know if you can tell

when I stare at the menu

under shiny plastic with a red rim

    when I glance

up I can tell you're reading the Mandarin

  • In that Field

    It never happened

that everything was beautiful and nothing hurt

but if it did it would have been

    lying in the grass

the kind that surrounds you like the ocean

    and flows like a river

We have something to learn from

    while he peeled his banana

and ate it in five bites
