When They Were Kids

The past

Full of mishaps

Full of mistakes

Full of mess ups

Full of errors

Contradictory

We should learn about

All the things we did wrong

So we can get better

But some people

Just can't

Some people hold on

And tell us kids

That when they were kids

They were not glued to their phones

Well when they were kids

Kids of different races

Couldn't go to school together

Some people need to remind us

Every day

That when they were kids

They would never talk to adults like that

Well when they were kids

Women couldn't make a choice

About their own body

Teachers remind us constantly

That when they were kids

They were so much less inappropriate

Well when they were kids

It was legal for someone to domestically

Abuse their partner

Everyone always says

Our generation

Is a disgrace

But at least we can learn

From their mistakes

And try to make them better

At least we can progress

And have an open mind

Because when they were kids

Minorities

Didn't matter

But now

Although it's not great

Us kids

Our doing a better job

At changing for the better

Than the president

Because back in his day

Women couldn't get abortions

And little kids had to go to different schools

All because of their skin color

    I know that feeling

    A bit differently

Not quite what the song was intended for

    But I know of love

    That opens doors

    The love that is

  • Dear New York City

    Dear New York City,

I don’t know what it is

That makes me love it so much

    Maybe it’s the buildings

    That stretch towards the sky

    Forever reaching upwards

  • Field of Roses

Have you ever seen dozens of roses?

    A field perhaps

    Covered in red beauty

Have you ever tried walking through dozens of roses?

    Your fingertips perhaps

    Covered in red blood

    From afar roses are gorgeous
