A Writer's Words

I write about the death of kings, of peasants, of a soldier
I form the meter to make the final trek of a soldier

Do not assume the writing is the writer
but assume the writing is to break/wreck a soldier

What soldier? A question long time asked,
the wary warrior prepared for an axe to his neck-- a soldier

What soldier? The one they hold at an arms length?
The one they burn and break, hand a blank check to a soldier

so that soldier will remain loyal, remain alive
remain writing. What is a writer but a wrecked soldier?

Give it up, give it up, give it up,
the writer will keep living a speck, a soldier
