Red, The Color of Love

By Ellie Eringis

Anger, outbursts and chaos in the heat of battle
Horrible, jarring shock, frozen in place and unable to move
Crackling, destructive power, used for harm and help
Long, flowing robes and stone-cold faces
Power and anger, thrown to the ground in the face of broken hearts and loss
An emblem, an imprint on me that others see, a shadow of what I used to be
Bloody claw marks ripped through, leaving behind scars and a broken heart
Suspicious eyes and secrets told behind closed doors
The color of love and heartbreak and loss
The color of power and abuse
Once the color of safety and hope
Bringing darkness to light
We are ready to fight
Never able to fight together again
Only against each other
Reaching out to help, only to fall down, down, down
The burden shouldered once again
Heartbreak and hope, running away only to find it again
A uniform showing the pain of war, showing the scars of heartbreak, showing the love and hope of finding each other once again
Reaching, reaching, reaching, holding a hand out towards the darkness
Holding each other finally, only once the end of the world has come
I should have died
I wasn’t about to lose you
Reaching, reaching, reaching, into the future and into hope, into love, into something unimaginable
The illusion shattered by powerful chemical glass, binding your heart shut
The glass shattered by love
Reaching out and finally finding your hand
Holding each other again
Finally able to love, finally able to be free, the burden lifted away like a cold, hard, mask finally removed
Finally able to hold your hand, red against red, heart against heart
Finally able to stay
